A Trip Around The Sun

Written: October 2nd, 2018

In the blink of an eye,

I was a raging ocean; fires erupting within me.

A glance from the universe,

blessing of mother nature,

in the endless branches of a tree.

Follicles of caramel sprouted from my skull,

fields of marigolds grew along green veins,

whispers of rebellion stirred in my gut.

I dreamt of freedom.

Enlightened ancestors discussing

the brilliance of golden skin

against the sun.

Architects of the universe,

Who envisioned destruction in the streets,

Sacrificing their limbs for an opportunity

for their actions to cultivate peace.

The blossom of a thousand carnations,

in the ashes of incinerated cages,

where the heavens produce

the beating of wild hearts; violent palpitations.

A trip around the sun.

I was carried on the wings of birds of prey,

who feast on the tongue of oppression,

to sing for the brown girls of today,

and the women of power in years of yesterday.
